Lovely listening. These arias are chestnuts for singers, emphasizing technique and controlled expression. Vargas, of course, has wonderful technique and commitment in anything he sings, and he brings those gifts to bear here. The arrangements for chamber ensemble are pleasant, though they take the performance out of the realm of authentic performance practice and more into the "palm court" type of listening experience. Whatever, it's very pleasing. For more authentic and compelling readings of some of these arias, check out Cecilia Bartoli's "Se tu m'ami" album; a different and more exciting approach. But this Vargas album is commendable on its own terms.
