A very nice, mindless, slapstick comedy that provides ninety minutes of laughs if you are in the mood for that sort of thing. Quirky and twisting plotline that's funny without resorting to toilet-humor, explicit sex, or gross-humor. (Yes, there is some off-color-humor and implied-sex, but not a lot. It's definitely still suitable for youngish adolescent viewers.) Not a "deep" movie, but provides lots of cheap laughs. Extras in the movie include a "movie in 5 minutes" summary, that does indeed capture the entire plot... (I told you it wasn't deep.) Summary: This is a nice funny movie for people who don't take their movies too seriously. A single dad on a losing streak becomes involved in an insane series of encounters and coincicences that result in him redeeming himself in the eyes of his son. Includes a couple of truly inept bad-guys, and another couple of pretty competent assasins that are having a very, very bad day. Also includes a hallucinogenic toad, illegal weapons dealers, corn chips, goats, Puggy, a garbage disposal, and a small nuclear explosion... Great deadpan performances by Ben Foster and Zooey Deschanel. One of Tim Allen's funniest roles, with a very large and talented supporting cast, all misbehaving in a half-dozen insane subplots. (Rene Russo, Stanley Tucci, Janeane Garofalo, and Patric Warburton to name a few of my favorites.) Two thumbs up... It's a cheap-laugh comedy that has enough unexpected twists to keep you watching. Most movies in this genre are so dumb that you regret having watched them. This is not the case with Big Trouble, it's clever and interesting, and was never stupid enough to force me to walk out of the room even once.Read full review
This is a funny madcap story that the author Dave Barry wrote himself into the fantasy. PLOT: Good dad down on his luck helps save Miami from a nuke, winning the pretty lady and the respect of his smart ass teenage son while bumping into the Russian mafia, a homeless guy who lives in a treehouse, a pair a NY hit men, their target a guy stealing from the Miami mob, FBI agents, 2 idiot criminals (1 is played by the guy from Jackass), Martha Stewart, a drunk security guard, a sexy Rene Russo, a crate of goats, and a Miami Police man who likes to be naked in public. This movie has so many funny moments and if you're from Miami, you'd understand that every one of them is possible! When the NY hit men try to leave Miami they drop their golf bag with clubs and a rifle right in from a Miami Police officer. The Hit man sweating tells the officer "I play with a guy that cheats". The Good Dad has a meaningful conversation with his son where the boy gripes about all that is wrong with his dad. Then the Dad says "All Right, it's my turn now, Up yours you little ---- Head!". Two thumbs up!Read full review
BIG TROUBLE, based on a Dave Barry story, is a screwball comedy for the 21st century. It manages to combine physical "slapstick" comedy with often subtly humorous dialogue. Although there are about a bazillion characters in this film, about a dozen running gags, and at least five little subplots, somehow it's possible to keep track of them all. (Tim Allen's voiceovers at various points in the film are a big help). I think my favorite aspect of the film is the absolutely deadpan way in which some of the funniest lines are delivered. This is some great Dave Barry humor, and I am not making this up. If BIG TROUBLE doesn't tickle your funny bone on at least one level, please get someone to check your pulse for you. One final note: if you either love or loathe Martha Stewart, you'll get a special kick out of this film.Read full review
