This is a good book read by a great audiobook actor, James Daniels. Daniels makes this book really come alive. The book is centered around character Elvis Cole, a Los Angeles private investigator and his partner Joe Pike. Cole is bright, witty and he adds a bit of humor to a dark story. Pike is all business, kind of in the style of Clint Eastwood's 'Dirty Harry'. Crais and Daniels do a good job developing these characters to make this believable and not just cartoons. The book is suspenseful and contains twists to keep you engaged the entire time. The story line is unique and Crais really begins to hone these characters and his writing style with this book. (Crais has a series of books that contain Elvis Cole and Joe Pike). Crais really comes into his own with this book in the series. Crais does a great job of painting pictures of scenes and people. The book begins with a police evacuation of a neighborhood in the hills of Los Angeles due to the impending threat presented by a raging wild fire. During the evacuation, the body of an apparent suicide victim is found along with a photo album of Polaroid pictures that depict victims at murder scenes. After further investigation into the photos it is determined that the Polaroids would most likely have had to been taken by the murderer or an accomplice at the murder scene while the murder is taking place. It is discovered that these photos are of the victims of unsolved murders and it appears that this was the work of the suicide victim who appears to have also been the serial killer responsible for the deaths of the women in the photos. Elvis Cole gets dragged into the mess because several years prior, it was Cole, who while in the employ of the suspects lawyer, found the evidence that lead to the acquittal of the suspect. It appears that because Cole was instrumental in getting the suspect acquitted, that the killer was able to go on to kill again. Cole is understandably upset by the prospect that it was his work that helped to free a murderer to kill again, and he begins to investigate the case all over. The story also has someone making threats to Cole's life, and what appears to be a high-level LA police department cover-up. This book is a good, solid read or listen.Read full review
