I like Danielle Steel, she's not a bad author. This is a story that takes place in the very early 1900's. Beata is Jewish and on vacation in Switzerland, she meets Antoine. He is Catholic. They fall in love, which is a big no-no at this time. They agree to meet and both of their families disown them. Beata decides to convert so she can be with Antoine. They get married and live on a farm with his cousins. She gives birth to their first child nine months after the wedding. A girl, named Amadea. They live on the farm for two years until a friend of Antoine invites him to take care of his stables and buy him horses. He agrees and they move. Antoine and Beata buy a house with the money he makes and they live there for 6 years before they have their second child, another girl named Daphne. They are very happy for another two years before he is killed. He is thrown for a horse and breaks his neck. By this time the Nazis are ready to invade and take all the Jews. They raid the homes and send them to work camps, where most die. Beata is safe for the moment because when she married her father wrote her name in the book of the dead. Now, Amadea is 18 and joins a convent. She wants to become a nun. One day while Beata is visiting the bank her old maid firgues out who she is. Her worst fears are coming true. She makes it home and plans her escape. Before she can pack there is a knock on the door. The Nazis take her and Daphne to a work camp. Now, Amadea is in danger. The nuns contact a friend who will hide her. She lives in the tower of their home for 8 months. She tries to escape but is caught and sent to a work camp. After 5 months there, she escapes with the help of a guard. She is found by the good guys and is sent undercover to another farm in Paris. She does undercover work for some time. This is wher she meet Jean-Yves and falls in love. They work together for a time before he is killed in a bombing. Then she is sent on a mission with Rupert. They do two missions together and find themselves attracted to each other. The next mission she does without him and she lights the bombs a second too soon and is thrown by the blast until some railroad tracks. Amadea breaks her back and gets severe burns. It takes months to heal and she is convinced that now is the time to return to the convent. One month before her release Rupert comes to visit and offers her a job as a nanny to the 12 German children he has taken in. Amadea takes the job and fears she'll never walk again. Just as she realizes that she is in love with Rupert, he has to go on another mission. While he is on the mission she learns to walk again, with the childrens help. Jusy=t as she is giving up hope of Ruperts return, he goes back and they are married. She takes the vows that she so longed to take, only with Rupert and not to be the bride of Christ. This is a wonderful read. A little boring in spots but not bad. It reaaly opened my eyes as to how the Jews were treated by the Nazis. To me, it was always a story you read about and never felt any connection to. Danielle Steel makes me feel that connection and I cry for all those people who were so mistreated for not believing as the Nazis did. What a shame. Read this one and you'll see what I mean. I can't imagine being torn away from my children because of my faith. Check it out.Read full review
Along with Agatha Christie, Danielle Steel is in my opinion the best female writer in the world, She is one of my favorite writers, I have read most of her novels, I wont divulge any plots of this book because if you are like me you dont wont to know the plots until you reach them in the book. But I do highly recomend this book.
I bought it because I like Danielle Steels writing style. I liked it because it teaches you about WW1 & WW2. It depicted how the Holocaust began and the efforts to end it. For those who knows little to nothing about it, it exposed the truth and some of the horrific experiences.
Have not read yet but I am sure I will not be dissappointed. This is one of my favorite suthors and I was excited to find so many titles in Large Print.
it starts as a mystery and futher get in the book things begain to happy. It is a good book to read.
