Shelby Foote writes the history of this terrible tragic calamity as a playwrite and novelist. His "story" is full of drama, irony, and hubris. Its a massive 3 volume work that reads more like Tolstoy's War and Peace than a textbook. Slavery was an issue but not the all-encompassing cause the war between the states. It was a war with the ever-growing power of the Union ( read Federal government) and the Constitutional rights of each state to their own independence. A mesmerizing read by a great writer.

It was in great shape. Bought it for my daughter so she could use it for her unit on the Civil War, for her History Class.

This is my 3rd time to read this set and at one million words per set that would indicate that Foote won my admiration, and attention. I grew up in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Charleston S.C. and Gulfport Mississippi. Sitting on the cannons, and exploring the areas gave me a great sense of wonder at the Civil War era and reading Foote opened my mind to what it must have felt like to be there. I have gone on to read countless volumns about this era but none do better justice to the work involved than Shelby Foote.
