No one does contemporary political fiction better than Richard North Patterson. "Balance of Power" is another fascinating tale about the intrigues of Washington politics at its best--and worst. A continuation of the Kerry Kilcannon series, this novel begins with a trajedy, forevering altering the lives of the people affected, including the President and First Lady. This time the focus issue is gun control. Patterson has done his usual careful research, lending the ring of truth to his fictional story of the battle for--and against-- sensible gun control in the maelstrom of the nation's Congress. The "villain" in this novel is the mythical gun lobby, the SSA ("Sons of the Second Amendment"), which is undoubtedly patterned after the thinly disguised National Rifle Association. Whether or not you own a gun (which I have in the past) or have never touched one, this compelling novel addresses a provoking topic that resonates loudly in America's culture, not to mention its politics. Regardless of your personal position on gun control, this is a thrilling read and one of Patterson's best.Read full review
