I bought this book because I had just finished reading Sally Hemings and it left so many unanswered questions. I wanted to read another book about Jefferson to learn more about him. Although this book is interesting, and tells a lot about his personal as well as political life, I am not enjoying reading this book. It is a very difficult read. This book is filled with letters, and articles that were published during Jefferson's time written by him and about him. The book is difficult to read because the language is so different than our way of speaking now. I have had to keep a dictionary by my bedside in order to look up all the words that I have never heard of before! I have to read some passages 2 or three times to understand what I am reading. Also, there are so many facts on each page that I will never be able to remember all that I am reading. On the good side, I am getting a "feel" for who Jefferson was, at least according to this author. I am an avid reader, but I am not a history buff . Perhaps someone who knew more about the revolution and Thomas Jefferson would enjoy this book more. I am going to finish it (if it kills me) because I am learning from it and once in a while I think it is good for you to read a difficult book instead of a fun book. To give you an idea of the type of books I do like , my last two books were Pillars of the Earth and World Without End by Ken Follett. I hope this review helps you. Paula RaeRead full review
Although well written and somewhat well documented, this book contains a fair amount of speculation about what might have been said, thought and done 200 years ago as to be almost fictional. This is a history of Jefferson painted by and focusing on emotion and drama, and is meant to be that. You will not like it very much if you are looking for a factual and historical biography. Reccomendation: Stick with Dumas Malone's study on Thomas Jefferson.
