Pack up the cats and move to the city is obviously a parody on the Guns 'N' Roses song called, "Move to the city", or simply Scott Lucas' take on it. He ain't packin his bags, he's packin his cats! Well this song to some disappointment lays out the mood for the whole album. Maybe it reflects a sad time in Scott's life, moving? Its a good album in its own way though, not like "As good as dead" but the music is more laid back, organized and thoughtful. He doesn't simply hate everything like on his previous album though, he broods and relents over certain subjects, such as isolation, loneliness, love... All in all, its a good example of mellow rock which still gets heavy in some places.
In the post-Cobain world, Rock was mostly about Nu Metal and what many like to call "Post-Grunge." While most of the aforementioned post-grunge was populated by unimpressive and generic rock acts like Nickelback and Creed, Local H was a pure shot in the arm of Rock N Roll. It's big, angry, and has all the teenage angst Nirvana could dish out if not more. Scott Lucas was second to none in songwriting ability in the late 90s, and while the Nirvana comparison is apt, Local H sounds like they listened to a lot more Classic Rock than Alternative. Standout tracks include Lead Pipe Cinch, Cool Magnet, The Kids Are All Right, and 500,000 Scovilles.
Great stuff, like Nirvana and Husker Du!
