James McBride is a very good writer who's had an interesting life. But this dual biography/ autobiography is a truly remarkable story. The author's mother is unlike any mother you know or have read about, and this unconventional character moved heaven and earth to raise a baseball team's worth of college-educated professionals primarily through the force of her own will. It's a good read, a moving story, and one you won't forget. Highly recommended.

I originally received a copy of this book for my 30th birthday years ago. I enjoyed it so much that I bought this copy as a gift for a friend of mine. It is a beautiful story, wonderfully told, and when I was through reading it I wanted to reach out to the author and meet him. I believe this book has something for everyone, and I highly recommend it.

I met the author at a book signing at N.K.U. in highland heights KY around 2000, very cool guy! I bought the book for my daughter......it's a very interesting view of life from his standpoint.

Mr. McBride made his/his mom's story very telling in how he and his mom dealt with how they were treated in the years in which it was written. I was struck by his love and awe of his mother and her independence and strength. The book kept my attention all the way through. The story was most inspirational.

I read it for a book club, chosen to raise awareness of Black Lives Matter. It's a memoir of growing up in Harlem in a family of 12 children with a white mother and a black father. Fascinating perspective, excellent writing. This is an award-winning book and I recommend it.
