Paulette Jiles, author of "News of the World", is an excellent writer. The "Color of Lightening" is in my view her finest work. Jiles tells a story about a black civil war veteran who starts a freight hauling business in West Texas. While away from home, Comanches raid the local settlement killing several and capturing his wife and two children. The book describes the father's efforts to locate and ransom his surviving family members.

This book is based on several different people's stories, during the 1860's & 70's time period. It's not a "Western", it's about people that lived in the West. It was very interesting. I've read one other book by this author & I'll buy more. She has a easy reading style, similar to Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I have read all of Jiles books. This one is very well written, but not quite as good as her others.
