Most appropriate for middle-school and high-school ages, Boyd's "comic book" gives a terrific introduction to the everyday dilemmas of pre-Revolutionary Americans, and draws the reader into the growing patriotism (and its detractors) in Virginia's colonial capital. There are the predictable appearances of famous Virginians of the period, but the real focus of the book is on the "common folk" of the time and their response to the growing crisis. The choices offered to the reader at the bottom of each page underscore the reality of the loyalist-vs.-patriot choice that confronted all colonials. This book would be a wonderful introduction to any young person about to make his or her first visit to Williamsburg.
