I bought the very same version of this book for my mother's birthday when it first came into print in the late 'seventies. She LOVES butterflies and this book showcases them in a very modern way even though it is based on artist Kanzaka Sekka's wonderful woodblock prints from a Japanese book published in 1904. Throughout the years my mother moved several times and somewhere along the way her book was lost. When I saw it on EBay I knew I wanted her to have it again. The book itself is a work of art; it comes in a protective sleeve and the pages fold out like a fan. Each section opens into a two-page spread of - what else - butterflies in flight! The illustrations are presented on variously shaded backgrounds and each page's butterflies are unique in size, color and design. Except for a two page introduction by the artist's friend Yoshir Zo, the book contains no text. Indeed, no text is needed and would only detract from the beauty found on each page. A book of inspiration, and for pondering the world's winged wonders.Read full review
