Simply put, if PREACHER had been a series of novels, rather than comics, it would've done a great credit to literature. But, as a series of comics, it's so much more. PREACHER, in short, is about America. Its place in the world, its past, its culture... everything. It's simultaneously a condemnation and an exultation of what America is and should be. But beyond that, it's the story of a man, his true love, an Irish vampire, and the quest to give God a piece of their minds. Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon do something that seems uncanny; they balance the absurd and the real so deftly that you're cheering at supernatural mayhem one minute, and jarred the next with shock. The characters aren't by any means the typical "comic book fare"; these are well-developed, deep, tragic characters - even the one named "Arseface". The part that still astounds me is the pacing; with 66 issues, you would expect more than a couple to fall flat. Not so. Much like Neil Gaiman's excellent Sandman, there is not a bad issue in the bunch; each one is thoroughly enjoyable, satisfying, well-drawn and well-written, producing one of the best comics series of the 20th (and 21st) century. So, all in all, if you collect comics, read comics, or are just starting to appreciate comics, and want something that will both push the boundaries of taste and the boundaries of expectations, get PREACHER. You won't regret it. Hell, it made me start writing my own.Read full review
