The Roadside Geology series gives an explanation of the geological features of various states, and a guide to where you can easily observe those features. The writing is directed to non-geologists, and every page seems to have at least one illustration or picture, and usually several. The photos are black & white, and the illustrations add one color. The Hawaiian islands are volcanic, and this book details the life cycle of volcanoes and how they affected the Hawaii of today. After explaining the geology of the region, the book gives you driving tours around each island, e.g., "Just east of milepost 6, erosion has worn a massive Kula basalt flow into boulders in the stream bottom at an old diversion dam." In case you're really motivated, the book even tells you where off road trails lead to more interesting features. We usually take our local geography for granted, because geologic time is so immense. This series gives a fascinating look at the formation of our world, and this book is a great addition to the series. I'm bringing it as a house-warming gift for a friend whose letting me stay at his place in Hawaii. Fair exchange, right?Read full review
I am a geology nut. I also am awed by volcanoes. The Roadside books are fabulous in explaining the hows and whys of geologic features. Great addition to my Roadside collection.
