My wife and I are living overseas and bought a few seasons of TV shows to show at home when the satellite reception is poor or the offerings are scarce. Stargate, SG-1 has become one our favorite programs to show on our home projector with popcorn in the evening because it's well-written, has a reasonable storyline and doesn't take itself too seriously. A major thing my wife likes about it is that although characters from previous episodes do pop back in for occasional cameo appearances, one is not required to have viewed all prior episodes to keep from being lost in the plotline (though the cameos do enrich the "universe is a small place" theme). I like it because although the show ran for ten seasons or so, each new episode felt varied and fresh enough that I didn't find myself being bored by a formulaic weekly where the plot is a carbon copy of the prior episode and only the supporting cast ever changes (granted, we're only two seasons in, so far). In all, I'd say SG-1 is a terrific program that we'll keep watching until the last episode of the final season.Read full review
Stargate SG-1 lasted 10 years on TV and was based on the movie that starred Kurt Russell and James Spader. Very good special effects and a somewhat complex story line involving alien interaction with Earth that dated back to the Egyptian Pharaoh dynasties. The premise of the series is that many of the Egyptian writings and culture could be tied to aliens that came into our galaxy and that they installed stargate portals to travel from one galaxy to another. Earth has several locations where these portals were installed and were used by the earth team to seek out the aliens that lived at the other portals. The portals provided contact with good as well as malevolent beings. The TV series mostly focused on the battles that occurred with the less friendly alien encounters. The series ran from 1997-2007 and there are also two DVD releases (Stargate: Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum) after the series ended on TV in 2007.Read full review
Why I like about this show, other than science fiction, the special effects, and the performance of the actors it is the concept of GOD. This concept is explored in each chapter giving you a lot to think about the creation of the Universe, and who did it. The writers of the show can sometimes take you to an incredible thinking process about life in other places different to earth and how they believe/behave to their GOD. Looking forward to watch all other seasons that I am adding to my collection. Great show !!!
There aren't many movies that can transition to the small screen but Stargate did and was a phenomenal success for 9 seasons. Great acting, amazing sets and engaging stories.
