I remember in "Jaws" when Richard Dreyfuss aka Matt Hooper and Robert Shaw aka Quint were comparing their scars while drunk on the boat. Well Capt. Quint showed the tattoo of the USS Indianapolis and told the story of his ship being sunk and more than 900 sailors/marines perished where 600 where eaten by sharks while awaiting rescue for four days in the Phillipine Sea, in the water. I remember this scene then and I met one of the survivors about a week ago named Michael Kuryla, who is traveling around the country and telling his story as to the whole event, to raise funds for a memorial in Indianapolis. The problem was that they delivered the bomb to Tinian Island that was to be dropped on Hiroshima, by the Enola Gay. The USS Indianapolis' mission was classified as Secret so no one knew their predicament. As Mr. Kuryla said in his own words " Some have called me a hero but the real heroes are the ones who are not alive today to tell their story, raise families........ I am here to speak for them who can't, and I feel determined to tell the story" If this book does not bring chills up your spine then there must be something wrong with you. Even sadder, Capt. McVay was court-martialed on December 3, 1945 and is the only Captain in the history of the U.S. Navy who has ever been court-martialed; he committed suicide on November 6, 1968 due to the burden he felt responsible for on July 30, 1945.Read full review
