A favorite from my childhood, info on lots of animals, plants and fungi, with excellent artwork. I’m not sure if the info is completely up to date as the book is from the 80s, but for the casual user I’m sure it’s as accurate as you’d need. Using it to take with on my trips to national parks. Noted a zone of wolverines in Southern California. This is an old book. Looked up current info. There is ONE WOLVERINE LEFT in So Cal. So sad. But I learned about it because of this book.

Overall, I am fairly pleased with this book, though honestly, the sketches of animals are a bit obsolete. With the ubiquitous phone cameras, I'd have expected real photos. I have owned better manuamanuals, but I give this a fair rating.

I borrowed this book from a neighbor. Well, JUST had to get one of my own! I live in Maine, USA. Our family loves exploring outside. They love finding something botanical, and watching birds. This book is easy to use, full of general knowledge, and it is fun looking up items to identify. Even though it is illustrated with sketch drawings, they are very detailed! Some pages at the begining with detailed desriptions of habitats and forests. Separated sections for mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, fish, invertabrates, trees and shrubs, wildflowers, non flowering plants, and mushrooms. No, it probably doesn't have every single little thing in these areas, it is a well informative with the most popular items, and is a great start in identifying. It has common, biological, and alternative names. Also, highlighted areas for habitat ranges, tips on identifying, including pointing out of specific markings, a little info on consumtion and how the Natives used them, closeups of barks, flowers/fruits of plants, and approximate sizes of items. The book is made to be used, and I believe you will get your money's worth out of it. I feel it was worth the investment. When I tried finding this book in bookstores, I have found that since this publishing, the book can still be bought, but not in this format. The sections have their own printing seperately now. So, if you want 'brand new' you will pay for 4 seperate books, that are twice the size, instead of just this one. Luckily, I was able to track this book down on an auction site. It is hardcover, and not too big to bring on a daytrip hiking. Enjoy.Read full review
This book is NOT an in-depth study of all NA wild life. It lists the most common flowers, weeds, birds, anyway you get the picture. I use it for a quick guide or reference manual. The pictures are very good at depicting the plant or animal in question, and the book, sparks an interest in all the additional material. I found that I was going to the book not for reference but for light reading and pure interest. Readers Digest North American Wildlife is fun for young and old. This book is a replacement for my copy (that I gave away) thinking I could order a new one; at the time of this entry it is no longer in print. Member cbliv September 30 2009 I have been using this book more often recently as I research more of the plant varieties in our present location, to see if any of the more desirable plants can be transplanted farther north. We are presently located a short distance north of Kingston Ontario Canada and will be moving to Owen Sound Ontario just off Georgian Bay. The two places are some distance apart but climactically are almost identical. If you can get this book grab it you will not be disappointed. Member CatsRead full review
This is a great handbook to assist with nature study of plants, animals, birds, mushrooms, etc. in North America. Quick descriptions and a photo help to discern between different plants - which is difficult for me. This will be great to help us identify flowers, green plants and trees when we do nature study in homeschool. The only thing I would probably have preferred is if the pictures were real photos rather than drawings. Even so - the drawings are well done & easy to distinguish different features of the plants. Additionally, alternate names of the plants are provided as well as several other characteristics.
