If you're a big fan of Lilian Braun's "The Cat Who ... " books, this is a "must have" companion! Even if you don't actually make any of the meals in this cookbook, you'll enjoy following the events and culinary escapades taken from many of the actual books themselves, including some of the snacks and treats that Koko and YumYum find delightful. It's fun to follow Qwill to some of his favorite haunts and friend's places to dine and take pleasure; you'll think you are there with him! Murphy and Stepinski take great pains to make these these recipes come to life (most I tried are quite good!), and accurately follow Braun's stories; they even use similar writing styles! A great read by itself, if you go by the books themselves (each mentioned in the cookbook) it is all the more enjoyable! Review by John.Read full review
I have read all the "Cat Who" books and use to dream about those dinners Quill and Polly attended at the Old Stone Mill and The Palomino Paddock in Lockmaster or when they were sampling one of Mildred's creations or Mrs. Cobb's home cooking. Ever wonder about those No-Holds-Barred burgers at The Hotel Booze in Brrr? I can't leave out Lois's Luncheonette. What's so nice about this book is that each chapter sets the stage by re-creating a particular scene from one of the books and the recipes for the dinners Quill and his companions had at that time. They don't forget food for your pampered pets, just like Koko and Yum Yum, who are the inspiration for The Cat Who books.
If you are a fan of the Cat Who books by Lillian Jackson Braun and have wondered about Celia, Mildred Riker and Iris Cobb's food that figures prominently in most of the books then you will love this cookbook. With the famous recipes of bread pudding, mac and cheese, meatloaf and the famous kabbibles come snippets of the books where the recipe is a part of the conversation. Naturally there are recipes that the rest of us Down Below might not have such as the Nasty Pastys and Taters and Neeps. With a few lucious sounding mixed drink recipes thrown in this is a very comprehensive cookbook. Its a lot of fun just to leaf through it but whether you are a dilletante or a serious baker - I highly recommend trying the Celia's Bread Pudding.
Wonderful book. Each chapter represents one of Mrs. Braun's "Cat Who" books and the food mentioned in them. I made Iris Cobb's meatloaf (that Quill and the cats loved), and my husband loved it too. Can hardly wait to try some more recipes.
