I've read other biographies by Donald Spoto and I liked them, so I bought this one. I think it's one of his best and ONE OF THE BEST biographies I've ever read of James Dean. Certainly, the enigmatic James Dean can't be an easy person to write about accurately honestly and well. From all I read, he was one of the most confusing, erratic and unpredictable actors ever to grace Hollywood. And, I DO mean GRACE... If you've ever seen any of his movies or early T.V. theater productions now on DVD you will know what I mean. When he was on the screen your eyes were riveted to him. BUT, he must have been hell to work with. And, that is not to mention what he must have been to live with !!! Still, he was another one like Marilyn Monroe, who was denied the benefit of his natural parents. His mother died when he was only nine and his father was cold and unresponsive. As horrible as this must have been for the ultra-sensitive Jimmy Dean, such inner tension is often the source of great Art,---sad to say... All this and more Donald Spoto brings out--- beautifully, without being overly-sentimental. He also gives the facts, in a footnote, WHY that infamous, blurry photo that is supposed to be James Dean naked in a tree,--- IS NOT HIM ! (Good job, Donald !) My highest recommendation for this excellent, fasinating book. I COULD HARDLY PUT IT DOWN.Read full review
