I bought this book to go along with a Kit doll that I intended to sell on eBay. I love the historical dolls precisely because they have stories of their own. I have read many of Valerie Tripp's books, and she can always be counted on to do her homework. "Meet Kit" introduces the reader to a young girl that most readers can identify with immediately, and confronts her with problems that were characteristic of the Depression (a lot of people out of work and having to make sacrifices.) Kit wants to be a reporter and loves to write up local news stories on a clunky old manual typewriter (a mechanical dinosaur barely imaginable to young readers.) She is adaptable. She has to give up her bedroom to boarders, but in setting up her new quarters in the attic, she realizes that it has more potential for decorating things to her own taste rather than her mother's. She also makes friends with Stirling, one of the new boarders. He is a sickly, spindly kid that many others would simply ignore. Despite his frail health, he is a bright, observant youngster who shares a lot of Kit's interests. Kit is a remarkable girl. In making the best of a world that seems to be falling apart, she shows creativity and resiliency. It's no wonder that The Powers That Be made a movie about Kit. She is worth knowing, and this first book will leave readers eager for more.Read full review
Wonderful book that I even enjoyed, as an adult! This story teaches that sometimes bad things can happen, but we can chose to make our lives better. With imagination and determination, Kit learns to make the best out of her life and home. A great lesson for us all

The book was great. My 6 year old daughter and I read the book. The story is about a smart child who aspires to be a journalist. She has many great learnings about trust and friendship along the way. The story teaches young girls strength and determination in life.
Kit is my favorite and my nieces too! Love the American Girl books, dolls, etc. This is a great way to encourage young girls to read and use their imaginations!
