Tod Slaughter had a fantastic career being one of the best villains in movies. British censorship against horror films was pretty strong when he made these. You couldn't show any blood, and the hits to the body couldn't land. To make up for that, Todd would roll his eyes and drool and use his amazing evil laugh. Slaughter was totally over the top, and really DUG being nasty, and you get caught up in it. The movies themselves were also based on hit novels or plays that the pubic had been used to since my great grandfathers time. This is the first in two volumes Johnny Legend has put out with some of the best of Todd Slaughter. SWEENY TODD is the most famous...you get the basic story told in less then an hour, without the Broadway music, or Helena Bonham Carter getting in the way. The second feature is CRIMES AT THE DARK HOUSE where Slaughter puts a spike through a man's ear, and then impersonates the victim when he gets back to his home. He gets nailed in the end, (all the villains in these films do..) but you have to admire how fast he can think on his feet. And it IS enjoyable watching him screw up and get it during the last reel. These movies are a big step beyond the usual 16mm t.v. prints that we used to see, the restoration job is first rate. Legend is around to set things up and you get some nice extras like lobby cards and a live radio broadcast. Very much reccomended.Read full review
