Epic story of a Russian doctor/poet set during the time of WWI and the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution. Doctor Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif) who meets and falls in love with a beautiful nurse, Laura (Julie Christie), while serving as an army doctor during WWI. He had seen her earlier in Moscow, when she shot an aristocrat who had violated her. The man had been a benefactor to her mother and had used that privilege to take advantage of Laura even though she was just a schoolgirl. Laura's fiancee was a man named Pasha Antipov, a severe political activist. Now, years later they are serving together in a medical unit. When he returns home, Yuri finds Moscow in turmoil, with the Szar and his entire family imprisoned. Yuri and his family and father leave their once wealthy home (Now living quarters for about 40 people) and travel to Yuriatin, a small town in the Ural Mountains, where they just want to live a normal life. Once there, they find that the revolution has all sort of factions, all jostling for power. Their country home has been locked up - appropriated by the Revolutionary commission. They move into an old cottage that wasn't locked. After several weeks, Yuri rides into Yuriatin to the library and runs into Laura. She is living there with her daughter, and is totally unaware that her husband whom she hasn't seen for years, is in reality the terribly feared revolutionary commander, "Strelnikov"! Yuri and Laura begin to have an affair, and even though his wife is pregnant, he continues to visit her when he comes to Yuriatin. One day while returning to his family, he is taken captive by a captain of the White Guard and forced to become a volunteer medical officer, or be shot. He is kept in service for more than a year before being allowed to go home. When he returns, he finds his family gone. He goes to find Laura. She has a letter for him from his wife. They have left and made it to Paris. Unable to leave, Yuri and Laura go to the house in the country where they spend some time. The revolution is almost over, and most of the fighting is done. Laura's husband, Strelnikov, is dead, and those people who formally were too afraid of him to mess with her, might now come for her and her daughter. The man who had sexually abused her as a teen, Kamarovski, is now a government agent. He has heard of her husband's killing, and has cone to offer sanctuary to her and her daughter and Zhivago, to travel with him to safety. Laura and her daughter go, but Yuri stays behind. He promises to follow but doesn't. He does not know that Laura is pregnant with his child. The movie jumps to twenty years later with Yuri's brother, a military general, searching for the child that Zhivago never knew. He is telling her the story of all that has transpired. She was lost during the fall of society at the end of the revolution and grew up in an orphanage. She never knew who her parents were. The general, Yevgraf Zhivago, told her about Laura, and her father and her heritage, and gave her a book of his poetry, which by now was considered a national treasure. She looked like both of them, and the picture of Laura in the book of the same name. She was engaged to a young engineer who operated a large hydro-electric dam. This film was easily one of the best 100 movies ever made.Read full review
