This highly unusual “Spinner” pendant necklace by renowned Native American artist,Jake Livingston, is beautiful and highly collectible.
Mr. Livingston grew up in New Mexico and is of Zuni and Navajo heritage. His biographies say he draws his inspiration from both his Zuni Pueblo heritage on his father’s side and Navajo traditions on his mothers. From what I have read, the design is traditional Pueblo themed, with the hummingbird, cardinal and flora being prevalent.
The inlays are delicate and intricate, displaying the artist\'s fine craftsmanship. It was crafted in 1975.
The pendant is not flat, but slightly convex with subtle inlays of turquoise, coral and abalone (mother of pearl). The details of the flowers, the cardinal and hummingbird are quite extraordinary. Perhaps the photos don’t show the delicate black beak of the hummingbird.
In addition to the hand stamping on the center piece, the narrow circle of silver has hand pounded designs on the edge.The outside circle is what allows the pendant to \"spin\" and is where the artist has signed his piece.
The piece is signed on the inside of this circle Jake L. ’75.
The artist was named Artist of the Year in 1988, by the Indian Arts and Crafts Association.
I am including the chain, but I do not know anything about it.
I recently noticed a Jake Livingston’s work, specifically, a spinner necklace with a cardinal and hummingbird, for over $3,000 on a gallery site.
