The Jews of Rhodes were an ancient Jewish community that had been largely devout since the expulsion from Spain in 1492. Under Ottoman rule, the community was treated well until the Italian conquest on 12 May 1912. On the eve of World War II, some 6,000 Jews lived in Rhodes. As a result of the Holocaust, the community shrank and today some 40 Jews live on the island.
