These earrings feature really transparent blue green colored ancient Roman glass shards accented with Bali silver beads. These pieces of glass measures about 3/4 of an inch tall. All solid sterling sliver and are made with no-slip ear wire so you won\'t lose one :) A total ONE OF A KIND! Comes with a little piece of paper that explains the glass in case you are giving it as a gift. Shipping domestically is free on this item.
These beads were cut from shards of glass excavated in Afghanistan, the Eastern most part of Roman reach, and date to about 400 AD, nearing the end of the Roman Empire. Excavated glass shards are actually from dump sites at glass making complexes. The glass either came from broken items or items the glass blowers felt were not good enough, the waste glass was cast aside and meant to be melted down again at a later date.
A quick note about my ancient Roman glass jewelry: Since I buy both silver and glass shards by weight, this is how my pieces are priced. The heavier the piece of glass or the more silver, the more expensive the finished piece of jewelry.
I feel compelled to discus ancient Roman glass and the different provenances. The Roman Empire existed for centuries and stretched for thousands of miles in all directions. The Israeli excavated glass I offer dates to about 50 BC to 100 AD and comes from the glass making locale Jalome. The Afghani excavated pieces I offer can still be called ancient Roman glass because the Romans did occupy the area where it was manufactured at the time it was manufactured. The Sasanians who lived in the region of Afghanistan where this glass comes from first met the Romans in the 300s AD and the Romans brought with them their glass making technology. Rome fell in 476 but the Eastern Roman Empire (which was created in 330 AD and was run out of Constantinople) soldiered on till about 695 AD. Roman occupation in Afghanistan waned after 651 when the Sasanian Dynasty fell and by 870 the Islamic tradition was completely entrenched in Afghanistan. Any glass newer than about 800 AD should be referred to then as Islamic and not Roman. I see other people offering ancient Roman glass from Afghanistan and they claim it is 2000 years old, it is not. Worse yet I see some offering Afghani glass that was manufactured in the 1800\'s and listing it as ancient. I want to always be clear about the dates and origins of the glass I sell and I hope to educate others so they will be better informed shoppers.
