A piece of German barbed wire. This is the heavy gauge wire used by German forces in ww2. A square 2mm wire with closely spaced 4 point barbes, much more heavy duty than the regular fencing/farmers variety.

Such barbed wire was placed in front of positions to halt attacking enemy forces, or lead them into gaps in the barbed wire covered by Heavy mg positions. These\"fences\" was usually churned to pieces by artillery and pioneers often had a risky job replacing the obstacles before next days attack.

This piece of history was found between German and Soviet trenches in avery fought over main battle line (HKL-Hauptkampflinie) in Kurland Latvia. It is about 20 cm long and has six barbes. A very cool little object.
