After the Battle of Gettysburg The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia was entrenched with their backs to the flooded Potomac River, prepared for battle with Meade's Army of the Potomac, where they expected the Federal Army to assault their line. Finally the flooded River dropped and Lee's Army crossed over to Virginia. An Original Civil War Field Printed General Order- Lee's famousGeneral Order No. 76 issued by command of "R.E.Lee. Gen'l." at the "Headquarters Army Northern 11th July, 1863- With their backs against the flooded River, General Lee appeals to his men to prepare for assault by Meade's Army on the Potomac: "After long and trying marches, endured with the fortitude that has ever characterized the soldiers of the Army of Northern Virginia, you have penetrated the country of our enemies, and recalled to the defence of their own soil, those who were engaged in the invasion of ours". "You have fought a fierce and sanguinary battle, which, if not attended with the success that has hitherto crowned your efforts , has commanded the respect of your enemies, the gratitude of your country and the admiration of mankind". " Once more the eyes of your Countrymen are turned upon you, and " the wives and sisters, fathers, mothers and helpless children lean for defense on your strong army and brave hearts". "Soldiers! Your old enemy is before you; win for him honors worthy of your righteous cause ---worthy of your comrades, dead on so many illustrious fields ', issued by Command of "R.E. LEE GEN'L" This Original General Order was printed in the field at Lee's HQ in the field, July 11th, as the Army prepared for the expected attack by the Federals. The Order is printed on thin Confederate manufactured paper, and is 1page, 8 x 5" with a large striking "Headquarters Army Northern VA" logo. Age stains, edge tears, 2 punch holes on the left margin. A Georgia seller obtained this small grouping of 20 some Orders, (which had also included a black margin Mourning Order in which Lee announces the Death of General Jackson) all issued May to July, 1863, and the Georgia seller stated that he had obtained them from the Georgia estate of some unknown Confederate Officer. I have only heard of one other copy being offered since. General& Special Orders were issued to communicate commands and information to theArmy. Each order, issued in writing by a command, was then printed fordistribution to each unit, either at an army department headquarter or bycommanders at local headquarters in the field on portable printing pressesoperated by soldiers. The orders were then issued to regiments, to be readaloud to the troops.
