A group of five medals, awarded to Bt. Lt. Col. W. L. Y. Rogers, comprising a Distinguished Service Order (DSO), a 1914-15 Star trio (Major W L Y Rogers RHA) (MID), and a General Service medal 1918-62 with Iraq clasp,
Sold together with a thick file of copied research and copied photos showing that Walter Lacy Yea Rogers was born on 20th September 1878, (Oare, Wiltshire per ancestry) was educated at Rugby where he represented his school in both rugby and cricket, he went up to Oxford and was a Rugby Blue 1898-1900. He became a 2nd Lieutenant on 28th March 1900 in the Royal Artillery. Played Rugby for Blackheath and in 1905 was twice capped for England. In 1914, now a Major, he served in France and Flanders and in Egypt from Jan 1916 to Feb 1916 where he was wounded. Subsequently he served in Italy Nov 1917 - March 1918 and then transferred back to France where he remained until the end of the war. He was mentioned in despatches three times and commanded "F" Battery in 1917-18.
He is mentioned in the history of the "F" Troop, Royal Horse Artillery (extracts included in research) on pg. 39 "the B.C. from Feb. to Oct. '17 (Major Rogers) was looked on as positively "uncanny" as regards his wonderful intuition as to the "right moment" and the "right place".
Rogers was awarded the DSO in the 1918 New Years Honours List. In 1920 he went to Iraq with F Battery, retired on half pay 1 Jan 1929. Appointed CRA Scottish Command (TA) 1 May 1935.
He died in Kensington in 1948.
