VERY RARE ZACHARY TAYLOR MILITARY AUTOGRAPH ORDER — SIGNED WHILE OCCUPING MEXICAN TERRITORYDURING THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR IN 1846

TAYLOR, ZACHARY. (1784-1850). Twelfth President of the United States (1849-50). Autograph Note Signed, “Z. Taylor, Genl., U.S. A[rmy] Comdg.” One page, oblong octavo. “Matamoros, Mexico”, July 27, 1846. Unevenly trimmed right edge, else very fine condition. To an unknown correspondent. [The Officer of the Guard]. Taylor orders:

“The Officer of the Guard in the City of Matamoros will keep in confinement George E. Hamilton formerly of the A[ndrew] Jackson Regiment, Louisiana Volunteers, until further orders, or until he pays over to John J. Oliver of said Regiment, the sum of twenty one dollars and fifty cents. Z. Taylor, Genl., U.S. A[rmy] Comdg.”

Written while Brigadier-General in command of the Southern division of the Western Department of the Army. He had driven the Mexican army back across the Rio Grande and had taken peaceful possession of Matamoros on May 18, 1846. Anything written from this period, while in Mexico, and on campaign is quite rare. A fine, concise example, that is perfect for display. It will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to find a better example from this period in Taylor’s life.
