Thomas Edison initials a typed document endorsing the minutes of his board.
Typed Document endorsed: "OK TAE" (Thomas Alva Edison), "O.K./C.H.W" (Charles Wilson) and "OK/WHM" (William H. Meadowcroft) at lower left margin, ¾p, 8x13. West Orange, New Jersey, 1916 February 29. Headed: "Minutes of a Special Meeting of the Board of Directors of Thomas A. Edison, Incorporated." In part: "The Chairman, Mr. Edison, stated that the object of the meeting was to ratify and approve the placing of order with the United States Industrial Alcohol Co. covering six tank cars of denatured alcohol at a price of 48 cents per gallon, the total expense involved being approximately $17,000; this being for the Disc Record Division...On motion duly made and seconded, the following resolution was adopted: RESOLVED, that the Purchasing Agent be, and he hereby is authorized to place an order with the United States Industrial Alcohol Company...." Also signed: "H.F. Miller" (Harry F. Miller) as Assistant Secretary. Accompanied by typed document initialed: "E" (Avery C. Emery), 1p, 6¼x3½. Purchasing Service Department, 1916 February 25. To Mr. Harry Miller. In full: "The Purchasing Dept. requests authority from the Board of Directors to place orders with the U.S. Industrial Alcohol Co. covering six tank cars of denatured alcohol at a price of 48 cents per gallon, the total expense involved being approximately $17,000, this for the account of T.A.Edison, Inc., Disc Record Divn. A.C. Emery. Copy to Mr. Mambert." Lightly creased and soiled. Horizontal fold touches the lower loop of the "E". Staple holes at upper left blank corner, lower edge irregularly cut. With TNS: "Henry Lanahan", 1p, 6x3¾. No place, 1916 March 11. To Mr. Musk. In full: "I hand you herewith suitable draft of minutes for a Directors Meeting of Thomas A. Edison, Incorporated approving the Moon-Hopkins contract and orders placed thereunder prior to March 3, 1916. I return also all other papers recently received from you relating to this matter and including our executed copy of the contract." ¾x¼-inch paper lost at center of lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition. THOMAS A. EDISON was Chairman of the Board of Thomas A. Edison, Inc.; CHARLES H. WILSON, WILLIAM H. MEADOWCROFT and HENRY F. MILLER were members of the Board of Directors. Thomas Edison is credited with inventing the phonograph in 1877, but he paid little attention to the invention (which he later said was his favorite) for ten years before making improvements to the initial model. In the decade between 1910-1920, the phonograph became a mass medium for popular music. In the 1920s, many companies, including Thomas A. Edison, Inc., worked on improving the quality of the recording. However, the presence of radio (which provided free music) in the mid 1920s, combined with an economic depression, caused phonograph sales to decline and Edison disbanded his phonograph business in the late 1920s.
