Duncan was a D-class destroyer leader built for the RN in Portsmouth Dockyard, commissioned in 1933.

The ship was initially assigned as the leader of the 1st Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean and made a brief deployment to the Persian Gulf and Red Sea, and spent the next few years in the mid 1930’s, "showing the Flag" around the Far East, visiting Japan, the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, Singapore, Thailand and Malaya.

With the outbreak of war, Duncan and her sisters Diana, Daring, and Dainty, were transferred to the Mediterranean Fleet to conduct escort duties. After sustaining a twenty-foot hole in her side whilst escorting Convoy ON18, she was towed to Grangemouth for repairs. Once refitted, she assumed her duties in the Mediterranean and joined “Force H” and participated in Operations Coat, Excess, Grog, Substance, Ironclad and Halberd and she was also involved in the Battle of Cape Spartivento.

Duncan was then converted in to an Escort Destroyer, which finished early 1943. She then joined Escort Group B-7 as the Senior Officer's ship, with Commander Peter Gretton in command at the height of the Battle of the Atlantic. During the next few months, Duncan participated in numerous convoys sinking two U-Boats (U274 & U282)

After a much needed refit in mid 1944, she was assigned to the 14th Escort Group for anti-submarine operations in the Western Approaches. Duncan conducted convoy escort and anti-submarine operations with the group through April 1945, and because she was leaking five tons of water a day, Duncan was turned over to BISCO for scrapping immediately after the end of the war.

The 5.25” x 4.75” solid bronze boat badge is in fine fettle and has 3 mounting hole to the reverse.
