Here is an extraordinarily rare, very unique and incredibly fascinating piece of NYPD crime history, very worthy of being displayed in a museum. Not only is it a scarce piece of history but what makes this Bertillon mug shot so fascinating is that the original matching numbered NYPD storage envelope, original NYPD booking paperwork and an original newspaper clipping reporting on the actual crime that Mr. Richardson was arrested for. The article details the crime, names the victim, the arresting officers, addresses in the Bronx and even Mr. Richardson name was underlined by someone. Please zoom in and read the newspaper clipping “Thugs Hold Up And Rob Two in Bronx, to have the background story of the mugshot is a fantastic and unusual addition. The language of the day is also fascinating. The mugshot is a thick cardboard in excellent condition with some small bumps to the corners. The envelope, paperwork and newspaper clipping shows some wear. Fantastic piece of history more than 110 years old!!!

The Bertillon method predates fingerprinting and was developed by a French police officer and famed criminologist Alphonse Bertillon in 1879. Bertillon applied the anthropological technique of anthropometric to law enforcement creating an ID system based on very detailed physical measurements of the body such as skull width and the length of fingers and arms. It was the first ever scientific system used by police to identify criminals.
