Circa 1900's this four sided solid wood trolley sign is a remarkable piece of NYC trolley history.

Back in the day, if you were taking the trolley to Ebbets Field to see the Brooklyn Dodgers, this is the trolley you'd hop on to go there. In fact, the Brooklyn Dodgers got its name from the pedestrians in Brooklyn having to jump out of the way to "dodge" the trolley!

Measuring slightly longer than 25" wide with steel end caps with a steel peg on each side which connected into a gear box at the front of the trolley. This allowed the trolley operator to manually turn the sign to change the destination displayed outside the trolley. The four destinations on this block sign are... Flatbush Av, Church & Utica, 63rd Street and 16th & Gravesend Av.

In almost fifty years of collecting I have only seen six of these NYC wooden trolley block signs. I own four of them, one is in the NYC Transit Museum and the other is owned by The Brooklyn Historical Society. These are VERY, VERY rare signs and very, very historically significant. Each of these six known trolley block signs have different destinations and each are likely one of a kind as very, very few have survived. There are most likely less than ten existing.
