Fresh from a local estate. Found together, and being sold as a single lot.

This sale is for two original SIGNED autograph CDV photographs of CaptainHUGH M. HUTCHINS, Company F, 117th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry.

Hutchins has signed each cdv: H. M. Hutchins / Capt. Co. "F," 117" U.S.C.T.

Backsides of photographs are blank.

Each photo is untrimmed, and measures approximately 2 1/2" x 4"

These display beautifully, with excellent focus and contrast. No rips, tears, holes, creases, folds, or repairs.

Again, these are original vintage photographs with authentic autographs, not a copy or reproduction!

Although a cursory online search turned up no birth or death records for Hutchins, I did find the following information:

*** According to volume XVI of the JOURNAL OF THE EXECUTIVE PROCEEDINGS OF THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, on December 3rd, 1867, "Hugh M. Hutchins, late captain of the One hundred and seventeenth Regiment United States Colored Troops, for faithful and meritorious services during the war, to date from March 13, 1865" was appointed by the Secretary of War ANDREW JOHNSON, to be major by brevet in the Volunteer force.

*** According to Scott F. Thompson's dissertation "The Negro had been run over long enough by white men, and it was time they defend themselves: African-American Mutinies and the Long Emancipation, 1861-1974" (2021), "Among those prosecuted for the 117th USCI’s May 12, 1865, mutiny at Camp Lincoln, Virginia, a reaction against Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Hutchins disciplining all sixty men of Company H for four or five men's sloppiness during a dress parade, was the company's white commander. Using 'contemptuous and disrespectful language' toward his superior, Major Edward Bacon, Captain Frank Doggett, who considered himself his men’s 'friend,' protested the order for his company to remain standing at attention on the parade ground. He objected 'to that manner of punishing a whole company for what a few have done' and demanded the authority to dismiss every non-offender. For 'criticizing the discipline of his commanding officer' in ear-shot of enlisted men and other officers, his court-martial charged him with inciting and encouraging mutiny. When a rowdy crowd of armed soldiers with fixed bayonets from the rest of the regiment subsequently formed to protest the mass reprimand and Doggett led his company back to its quarters, Major Bacon accused the captain of failing to participate in the effort to suppress the mutiny. For voicing his opposition to the excessive disciplining of the black rank-and-file during the early postbellum period, Captain Doggett received a conviction and dishonorable discharge."
