Antique Mahogany Train Station Hotel Clock, James Ballantyne, Glasgow Scotland:
$14500.00

This antique hand-carved mahogany wall clock, according to my late father, hung in the Grand Central Train Station in Glasgow, Scotland -most likely inside the adjacent Grand Central Hotel (now the Voco Grand Central), which was designed by Scottish architect Robert Rowand Anderson and built in 1883 as a Great British Railway hotel, having an entrance directly open to the Central Train Station and another entrance/exit streetside at 99 Gordon St. The clock casing has no identifying engravings, plaques, or other markings besides the clockmaker's name and location on the clock face. Contemporary/old photographs likely exist somewhere in archives or private attic albums. According to sources, James Ballantyne was a Scottish clockmaker residing in Glasgow during this time (see reference in pics) and the ornate Queen Anne styling aligns with what would have been proudly displayed for the more sophisticated train-station clientele of this posh public hotel.
This historic hotel with its precious clock has survived the Great Depression and two World Wars, among other things, hosting famous names such as Winston Churchill, Fred Astaire, and JFK. It has undergone extensive renovations and refurbishing for new owners wanting to modernize to their eras when, during one of these overhauls,(presumably), its ornately carved period clock, looking tired, dated, and without movement in years, was likely transferred to the basement to make way for fresher interior designs and trendy pieces. My father brought this clock back with him from Europe in the 1980s with many other Scottish antiques after asset liquidations of long-term storage items had made them available as 'architectural salvage' pieces.
As mentioned, this clock has no identifying plaques, numbers, or inscriptions except for the name on the front: 'JAs Ballantyne & Son' and 'Glasgow'. According to my clockmaker, the original clockworks that remained were unrepairable, so the decision was made to attach a quartz clock mechanism (battery operated) withantique-styledhands, allowing for an actual time display. All the pictures are recent. Also shown are two pictures of the actual Hotel from its different entrances; streetside and the interior connection to the train station.
With that, I've kept the original gear train assembly with its elements and hands, which will be included with the clock. The clock measurements are 54" tall, 38" wide, and 8-1/2" deep. The clock face measures 18" diameter. The squared casing on its back measures 21-1/2" x 31-1/2" and has two small access panels on either side. The weight is an estimate of 75 lbs (including wood framing). This clock shows its age with discolorations, scuffs, scratches, and small dents. However, it is also structurally intact with all of its carved wood pieces, clock face, and leaded glass face cover with a brass open/closing hinge. You can pick this clock up locally in Edgefield, South Carolina, or arrange for shipping through your own approved shipper. In either case, it's currently set into a wood frame on wheels to hold and transport it safely after further wrapping and wood framing are added. Let me know if you have any questions.
