Antique Romanian bed cover tapestry dating to early 20th century. It comes from the Cluj area of Transylvania. Entirely handmade and signed L.G. in the centre with the initials of the artist. This is made of hand spun and hand loomed wool which has then been hand embroidered. It is made of 2 parts joined together and has a hand crocheted wool fringe. Everything has been hand sewn.The bed cover features an Art Nouveau style embroidery of stylized carnations with wondrous leaves, a popular motif in the Balkans, of Ottoman influence. In the centre of most carnations there is la charming motif of a horse.Beautiful piece of folk art textile, in amazing condition as it has been carefully looked after being a dowry piece. The colours are wonderful, the background is a dark red against which the embroidery really stands out with its vibrant tones.The piece is clean and ready to use or display. I have aired the piece but there is still a little smell of mothballs because of the way it was stored. This was conceived as a bed cover for the typical peasant bed of the region, but of course it could be used as a sofa cover or hung on a wall for display. Dimensions: 208 cm by 177 cm* this is one of two pieces available which are almost identical and would work great at a pair. The differences are very subtle and consist in slightly more white being used in this piece to outline the edge of a couple of leaves as well as color the outer horses, as opposed to the other piece where yellow was used.
