An old sign from Lockheed Aircraft's Advanced Development Projects known as the Skunk Works. It was taken from the wall of building 180 Plant B-1 in 1993 when all except this building had been demolished as Lockheed moved out of Burbank, California. It was made by the Lockheed Arts Department on poste poster board and was meant to emphasize quality of product and likely dates to the 1960's or1970's when it was still being produced. The Skunk Works was a top-secret division of Lockheed headed by Kelly Johnson, a world-famous aircraft designer. Poster pictures the SR-71 Blackbird first disclosed by President Lyndon Johson. It was a spy plane that replaced the Air Force's U-2 shot down in 1958 over Russia. It could fly at 2300 mph and travel long distances. It was meant to fly at high altitudes and outrun Russian missiles. It was and still is the fastest sustained flight aircraft. Made of titanium and classified materials to make it the first stealth aircraft, invisible to radar. It is in good condition with few signs of wear and measures 37-1/4 by 17 inches. Back has in pencil my description. This was a very scary jet when not in quiet mode. It was retired in the early 1990's as being redundant to satellite spying and also as being expensive to maintain. It is doubtful that few if any more of these are left in existence. NOTE: Do NOT clean the surface with alcohol or water. Test any cleaning agent on a corner. However, the surface is clean and does not need cleaning. The poster board used is not paper or thick paper but is cardboard around 1/10-inch thick (I can't measure it accurately).
