Finest Quality and Rarity Ancient Matched Pair of Large Bronze FibulaeCirca 1200-800 BCE
Proto-Celt, Hallstatt I Culture
12.5 cm Long (5 inches) x 5.5 cm Wide (2 inches)
Weight approx 60 grams eachA pair of finely madeBronze Age European fibulae, or brooches, used to fasten one's cloak or cape. Each matching piece is made from a single section of bronze wire of undulating width, finely incised and intricately twisted in spirals, terminating in a long straight pin.
Both fibulae areintact and in an Excellent state of preservation. Both pieces are covered in stunning blue-green patina. They are presented in custom oakmounts that are antique in their own right.
Fibulae of this size and quality are a testament to the skill of Bronze Age craftsmen. This handsome and much esteemed pairwould likely have been owned by only the highest ranking members of the elite warrior class.
The spiral motif remains central to the Celtic artistic tradition for anothermillennium. The motif likely has a religioussignificance.
Fibulae of this type represent the earliest artwork from the dawn of Celticcivilization in Central Europe.
