GRAIL-LEVEL ANIME HISTORY: 1995/1997 Ghost in the Shell Amada Unnumbered Pre-Production Test Print / Proof Pair featuring a Dramatic Inverted Foil Factory Error.
Up for sale is an incredibly rare, possibly unique pair of Ghost in the Shell pre-production trading card prints from the mid-1990s Amada/JPP era. This pair consists of two separate cards cut from the same misfed factory sheet, serving as forensic proof of a printing line error.
- Card A (Right side of photos above): Features Major Motoko Kusanagi draped backwards over heavy machinery. The metallic chromium/foil layer is on the front side as intended. The reverse side features the cybernetic barcode background with no foil application.
- Card B (The Inverse Error) (Left side of photos above): The entire layout was inverted during production. The front-side imagery plate was pressed onto the reverse side of the card, resulting in the cybernetic vertical barcode pattern being directly foiled and stamped onto the front and the image of Major Motoko Kusanagi draped backwards over heavy machinery is left with no foil application.
True Prototype Status:
Both cards are completely unnumbered and entirely devoid of the standard 1995 copyright text, trademarks, or publisher logo. In 90s Japanese card manufacturing, these text overlays were applied during a separate final ink pass. Because this sheet suffered an inversion error, it skipped the final text pass entirely before being machine-cut—solidifying these as authentic, pre-production factory printer proofs rather than standard retail quality-control slips.
Provenance & History:
These cards have been personally held by a single owner since approximately 1997. They were acquired during the height of the 90s anime boom via direct proximity to a vintage anime retail store owner and early US anime convention networks. This is a true \"time capsule\" find that has never been circulated in the collector market or offered publicly until now.
Condition Report:
Please review the high-resolution photos carefully. Because these cards were stored loose in a drawer for nearly 30 years without penny sleeves, the sensitive chromium surfaces exhibit light, microscopic surface hairline scratches visible under direct, high-intent lighting. There are no major creases or severe bends but there are some small dimples on card A (shown in photos). Edges show small notches from their cutting tools visible on the top & bottom edges of the cards. They are being sold raw and exactly as found to preserve their history.
