Incredible museum-quality Detroit Pontchartrain Hotel Dinner Plate!This plate was likely created in 1907 when the hotel opened. The original Detroit Pontchartrain Hotel was built between 1905-1907 on the corner of Cadillac Square and Woodward Avenue in Detroit. This is was one of the primary great 20th century hotels built in Detroit, including the Pontchartrain, the Book Cadillac, The Tuller, Fort Shelby and The Statler. This historic hotel became the informal planning space for the early car industry, as car industrialists used to meet at the bar at the Pontchartrain to share their ideas for new concepts in cars.
When the Pontchartrain closed down on January 31, 1920, crowds ran through the hotel, taking with them artifacts before the hotel was demolished to make space for the First National Building. This latter building still stands where you can walk through the lobby today on the first floor and look up to see historic architectural details in the plastered ceiling which has been opened for viewing. Grab a shake at Shake Shack (also on the first floor) and walk through the lobby, imagining what it was like when Henry Ford, the Dodge Brothers and others gathered at that location to exchange ideas on car design.
This plate is very rarely seen, a real survivor of the beginning of the automobile industry in early 20th century in Detroit. Others who have found one of these plates have reacted like they have won the lottery (see online documentation). This particular plate is in fabulous condition.
