הורודצקי נולד בעיירה מאלין (Малин) (אנ\') שבמחוז רָדוֹמישְל (אנ\'), בפלך קייב שבדרום-מערב רוסיה (אוקראינה), בן למשפחה מיוחסת של אדמו\"רים: מצד אביו, ר\' יוסף משה בן ר\' ברוך, היה מצאצאי האדמו\"ר רבי מנחם נחום מצ\'רנוביל, ומצד אמו, ציפה בת ר\' גדליהו טברסקי, היה מצאצאי הבעש\"ט. בגיל שלוש התייתם מאביו, ובשנת 1881 עבר לבית סבו בצ\'רנוביל וקיבל חינוך מסורתי ותורני. בתרנ\"ב עבר לבית דודו אברהם דב בברדיצ\'ב, ועבד אצלם כגזבר בבית המסחר לאריגה. בהשפעת דודו, הרב מרדכי שמואל, כתב את ספרו הראשון, \"אמרי שפר\" (אודסה 1893). בתרנ\"א פרסם חוברת בשם \"שם משמואל\", מונוגרפיה על ר\' שמואל אליעזר הלוי איידלס (מהרש\"א), ובה עבר מן הספרות התורנית לחקר תולדות הרבנים. בשנת 1896 פרסם את החוברת \"כרם שלמה\", על רבי שלמה לוריא (המהרש\"ל). לאחר מכן המשיך בחקר החסידות, ובשנת תרנ\"ח ייסד וערך את המאסף \"הגורן\", שקיבץ מאמריו במדעי היהדות ויצא במשך 30 שנה, עד לשנת תרפ\"ח. ב-10 קבציו לקחו חלק כ-40 סופרים וחוקרים בולטים מארצות המזרח והמערב.

בשנת תרס\"ז-1907 עזב את רוסיה ונסע מערבה ללמוד פילוסופיה והיסטוריה באוניברסיטת ברלין. בשנת 1907 נבחר כציר מברדיצ\'ב לקונגרס הציוני ה-8. בתרס\"ח המשיך את לימודיו באוניברסיטת ציריך, וממנה עבר לאוניברסיטת ברן, בה קיבל ב-1912 תואר דוקטור על יסוד הדיסרטציה \"זרמים מסתוריים-דתיים אצל יהודי פולין במאות ה-16–18\". מ-1912 עד ראשית 1915 התגורר בברלין. בתקופת מלחמת העולם הראשונה עזב לשווייץ, בה התגורר עד סוף 1921, אז שב לברלין וישב בה עד אביב 1939. בשבתו בברלין (1907, 1912–1915, 1921–1939) נמנה עם חוג סופרי העברית בעיר.‏[1] בחודש אדר תרצ\"ט עלה לארץ ישראל והשתקע בתל אביב.

הורודצקי פרסם מאמרים במרבית העיתונים העבריים הבולטים (\"המליץ\", \"הצפירה\", \"הצופה\", \"דבר\", \"העולם\", \"האשכול\", \"מאזנים\", \"הדאר\" ועוד) וכן בעיתונות הלועזית (\"דֶר יוּדֶה\" של מרטין בובר, \"יידישה רונדשאו\", \"יברייסקאיה סטארינה\", \"מונטסשריפט\", \"ארכיו פיר רליגיונסוויסנשפט\") וב\"אנציקלופדיה יודאיקה\".

בנוסף, פרסם מספר רב של ספרים בנושאי החסידות והקבלה. ספרו הגדול \"החסידות והחסידים\", בארבעה כרכים, ראה אור בהוצאת דביר בשנת תרפ\"ג (ובשלוש מהדורות נוספות). מפעל חיים שני, \"המסתורין בישראל\", מתקופת המקרא ועד רמח\"ל, החל להופיע בהוצאת נ\' טברסקי בשנת תרצ\"א; בימי חייו ראו אור שני הכרכים הראשונים, והשניים האחרים נשלמו בשנת תשכ\"א-1961.‏[2] המונוגרפיות ההיסטוריות שחיבר כונסו בספרו \"יהדות השכל ויהדות הרגש\" (2 כרכים, הוצאת נ\' טברסקי, תש\"ז).

בשנת תש\"ח זכה בפרס ביאליק לחכמת ישראל על מפעל חייו בחכמת ישראל ובפרט המסתורין העברי, ובדגש על חמשת הספרים שפרסם בשנתיים שלפני כן: \"תורת הקבלה של האר\"י ור\' חיים ויטאל\", \"יהדות השכל ויהדות הרגש\", \"עולי ציון\", \"שלוש מאות שנה של יהדות פולין\" ומהדורה חדשה של \"שבחי הבעש\"ט\".‏[3] חוקר הקבלה גרשם שלום נמנה עם מתנגדיו של הורודצקי ושיטתו.

בשנה השמונים לחייו כתב את זיכרונותיו, שנדפסו בהמשכים בכתב העת \"גליונות\" של יצחק למדן, וראו אור בצורת ספר בסדרת \"דביר לעם\" שלושה ימים לפני מותו ב-1957.

ליובלו ה-75 הוצא לכבודו ספר יובל בשם \"אדר היקר\", ובו דברי ספרות ומחקר מאת סופרים ואנשי מדע בעריכת עמנואל בן-גוריון, שהוגש לו ביום הולדתו ה-76.

הורודצקי היה נשוי למירל לבית מָגָזָניק, דודניתו. אשתו עזרה לו בעבודתו הספרותית ותרגמה לאנגלית מבחר ביוגרפיות מפרי עטו. נפטרה בפברואר 1948 מסרטן, בגיל 59.‏[4] הורודצקי נפטר ב-25 במאי 1957 בביתו שברחוב השופטים 8 בתל אביב, בשנה ה-86 לחייו. נקבר בחלקת הסופרים שבבית העלמין טרומפלדור לצד אשתו מירל, בהלוויה שבה לקחו חלק סופרים, עיתונאים ואנשי ציבור.‏[5] במותו ציווה את נכסיו וספרייתו לעיריית תל אביב, ואת הזכויות על ספריו בהוצאת \"דביר\" לאגודת הסופרים, שבה היה חבר

For multiple purchases, we usually use Priority Mail, a flat rate envelope for $25 ($21 to Canada) can fit 3 Regular sized books and a flat rate box for $63 ($43 to Canada) can fit 8-10 books of average size. A large flat rate box for $80 ($56 to Canada is available as well and can fit up to 18 books, depending on size. Oversized books are more expensive to ship, please ask for shipping quote for multiple books in advance to prevent any misunderstandings. International postage costs are subject to USPS yearly rate increases.

RETURN CUSTOMERS: Return customers get 7% off every order, from the second shipment and on. This is not deducted automatically, so please request an invoice and we\'ll send one over asap.
