This is a wonderful old antique French \"Globe Terrestre\" - but it wasn\'t until I got home and looked at it closer that I saw that itlooked very much like a\'marriage\' between two separate well-known period globe makers! Fascinatingto wonder when it was paired up!
The globe has alabel onit whichreveals thatit was\'dresse\'by J FOREST, andshows GIRARD et BARRERE as \'editeurs\'.I managed toresearch the following information on them:
J. Forest made a large variety of globes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, largely for school use, but also for home use. Their prolific output included table globes, some on ebonized turned stands; floor globes; and novelty globes, including terrestrial globes on geared turntable stands, and cigarette lighters incorporating globes. In the 20th century Forest produced light up globes, including modernist aluminum bases. Forest globes were mainly labeled in French, with some for export in English or Spanish.

In the early 20th century, J. Forest was apparently succeeded by the geographical publishing firm Girard & Barrère, which continued to offer \"Globes Forest\" at the same Rue de Buci address in Paris that Forest used. During the early and mid 20th century the firm also produced globes and geographical publications as Girard, Barrère et Thomas. This may have been a merger or partnership with the 19th century Paris globemaker G. Thomas.

However, itbecame clear to me looking at FOREST globes that thestands made fortheirglobes were nothing like that on which this globe stands!
A little bit more research - and I am fairly sure that the cast-irontripod stand was made by J.LEBEGUE, another globe maker originally, I think, from Belgium. Pictures of some of his earlier globes certainly had the sametripod feet fitted as in this example. There are three classical moustachioed masks at the top of each \'leg\' and, on one of the oval-shaped indents between each faceare what appear to be the monogrammed initials, L B - I assume for Le Begue?
I could only discover this information about LEBEGUE:
J. Lebègue & Co. published globes in Brussels, Belgium. Their small globes are often labeled J.L. & Co. The geographer R. Barbot worked for them, probably in close relationship
I would hazard a guess and say that the stand is actually earlier than the globe - perhaps late 19th/early 20th century, whilst the globe may be 1920s/30s.
.The globe itself turns freely and is all secure.
It has some wear commensurate with age and the top finial which would have held the globe in place and accompanied the tripod standhas long gone - but it\'s stilla stunning piece.
The measurements: Overall height 23\"; Globe diameter c.12\".
The stand of course adds significantweight to the item (c.3.5 kgs) which is reflected in the postage quotes below.
Timeworn in places commensurate with age and use there are lots of photographs above and below.
