\"JAN #1 - Uniforms and Insignia\" scarce World War Two pictorial US field manual:
$129.00

“JAN #1 - Uniforms and Insignia” is aunique and substantial World War Two militaryfield manual which features heavily-detailed all-colorillustrations of the uniforms and insignia for all the primary forces engaged inWorld War Two. Published jointlyby the Army’s Military Intelligence Service and the Office of NavalIntelligence (\"Joint Army-Navy\" = \"JAN\"), this was intended as a rapid recognition guide for all US forcesin combat, with an emphasis on Axis forces, in both the Pacific and Europe, plus uniform-identification tools for some key neutral countries, as well.

This particular edition representsthenear-maximum \"expansion set\" for this manual, with 136 pages total, all contained in their original tan and blue clam-shell-style box. The format featuresglossy, loose-leaf, 3-hole-punch pages, each 6.25 x 10.5 inches in dimension, the majority of whichare displayed as double-width illustration plates. Allthese pagesare bound, as originally, with a single shoe lace, to enable the ready addition ofnew pages intermittently. The earliestentry I can find here is dated April, 1943, with the last updates datedmid-1944.

This 70-year old manual is inexcellent condition, reflectingcareful dry storage and only minimal handling. With only a few exceptions(just a couple minor bumps and a fewslightly rubbed edges), thepages here are all clean and white, and all the illustrations are in superiorcondition, still shiny and unmarred in any way. The exterior boxcover, made ofheavy cardboard, shows only modest wear, though withsomesplitting atthe corners and a general but typical loosenessat the primary hinge.

The interior contents of this manual feature heavier-bond file dividers,to segregate each military branch into its own section.Almost all of the relevant militaries engaged in WWIIare included in this particular edition. Complete uniform andinsignia details and illustrations are included for all the following:

The British Navy

The Japanese Navy

The Japanese Army

The Netherlands Navy

The German Army

The German Navy

The German Air Force

The German Armed Elite Guard

The Italian Army

The Italian Navy

The Italian Air Force

The French Navy

The Spanish Navy

The Brazilian Navy (this one section is empty)

This particular manual was distributed to US Navy ships inthe Pacific mid-1944. As an “unclassifiedpublic document”, it became the property of my father, a Lt. Commander aboard theUSS Holt (DE-706), at the conclusion of his service in January, 1946.
