Original civil war era black tarred haversack. The outside dimensions are 9 inches wide 11 inches long.18 1/4 long with flap. 2 inches wide. The inside has 3 compartments. The outer one has a button closure. The other 2 compartment have no closure buttons. The inside sides have 2 small sewed in pockets, one on each side for utensils. The outside buckle is made of brass. The shoulder strap is about 54 inches long. I beleive the inside would have had a cotton bag to go inside. This bag is missing. The cup is from aurora silver plate company which was in business from1869 to 1919. the engraving on the cup says Minnie. Please ask any questions or opinions and i will post them for all to see. I am in no way an expert on civil war gear but from my limited experience this is authentic and not a reproduction. If this can be proven to be a reproduction i will gladly accept a return I received this in a message Good morning sir,
I just wanted to let you know, this haversack is not an original from the civil war. It appears to be a model 1878 haversack that was cut down, tarred, and made to resemble a civil war one. Probably from the centennial celebrations, or made for a movie. If you have any questions about it, feel free to let me know I asked him to explain how it was cut down and his reply was: Certainly sir. The closure flap is the most tell tale way of noticing. On an 1870s era haversack, this would cover the entirety of the front of the bag, and not just the opening at the top. The closure buckle and strap have also been re arraigned to mimic the look of a civil war haversack.I have asked numerous civil war collectors about this before I posted this for sale on with no response or they didn\'t know. After this reply and some more research I have to agree with him. I am going to keep this sale going but with this new revelation I am going to drop the price to $100 to start. Anything less and I will keep it, as this makes a great display piece.
I do not misrepresent anything I do not believe is 100 % accurate. I also give my descriptions as accurate as possible. I believe it\'s better to be honest about an item and not just sell something that isn\'t true to just make a buck I am leaving the title basically the same so as not to confuse people who have viewed this. Please check out my other item for sale
