Circular silver-plated medal with laurel wreath suspension; the face with a central circular medallion bearing the head of King Carol I facing left, circumscribed ‘CAROL I REGE AL ROMÂNIEI (Carol I King of Romania), imposed on a crowned eagle with wings spread, a cross in its beak, a sword in its right claw, a sceptre in its left, the word ‘PACE’ (Latin = Peace) at its tail, circumscribed ‘ÎN AMINTIREA ÎNĂLŢĂTORULUI AVÎNT 1913.
The reverse with a female figure symbolising victory with a palm branch in her right hand and a laurel wreath in her left, the Romanian army crossing the Danube on a pontoon bridge, the Balkan mountains and a sunrise beyond, circumscribed ‘DIN CARPAŢI PESTE DUNĂRE LA BALCANI’ (from the Carpathians across the Danube to the Balkans); on replaced correct ribbon.
The medal was created on 7 November 1913 and awarded for participation in the Second Balkan War. During the First Balkan War of 1912 an alliance of Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro and Serbia threw the Ottoman Turks out of almost all their remaining European territories. However, the victors fell out over the division of the spoils, with Serbia and Greece forming an alliance against Bulgaria and the Second Balkan War broke out at the end of June. After initial setbacks, Bulgarian military successes stabilised the front in Macedonia. The situation was transformed by the opportunistic invasion of Bulgaria by Romania on 10 July, leaving the former in a hopeless position. As a result, Romania gained Southern Dobrogea (The ‘Quadrilateral’) despite its overwhelming Bulgar and Turkish population, a situation only reversed in 1940 and confirmed in 1947. A good example.
