This is a white and brown polished scrimshaw powder (cow) horn reproduction that depicts the Lewis and Clark expedition. The front of this horn has scrimshaw reading \"CORPS OF DISCOVERY, LEWIS AND CLARK \" with dates 1803-1806\". Above the inscription is a beaver in front of a timbered and snow capped mountain scene. The reverse side is an early depiction of the Upper Missouri River country from the Rocky Mountains to the Norther plains. This side shows 12 river systems on the upper Missouri river country . The map side also has a compass with various designs near the wooden plug end. This horn is 9 1/2\" long with a nice curve and can be worn on either side. This will hold enough black powder for a day of shooting or hunting. The base plug is made of polished wood, hand fitted and held in place with silver tacks. The base has threaded brass removable plug for filling of powder. The braidedstrap is 42\" long, made of brown leather and woven with dark brown wool and two tassels . This is a functional horn to be used, but will look good for re-enactments, a wall hanger or at primitive shoots or rendezvous. These horns are not mass produced, but done one at a time by hand and made in the US. Each horn is numbered and dated. Each horn involves several stages of work that takes up to several days to complete. Each horn is different and no two being alike. The scrimshaw is done with hand tools and finished in black ink, the inscription will not wear off.
