the item you are selling is actually a WWII Oxygen Breathing Apparatus known as an \"OBA\". It was used by USN Damage Control Crews to breath when fighting fires. The canister apparatus that you are wearing on your back should actually be worn on the front. Here is the way it worked: you loaded a sealed potassium chlorate canister into the receptacle and used the screw handle to hold it in place. When you were ready to use it you used lifted the bale, which punctured the canister. When the crystals in the canister were exposed to the air it began to generate oxygen through a chemical process. It probably gave you air for about 20 minutes. After the canister was expended (there was a timer on the front of the unit to alert the operator) he would exit the spaces where the fire was and move to a location with fresh air. he would then lean forward, turn the crank on the screw handle and let the expended canister fall to the deck.
