In Indian folklore it is said that there was once a chief with turquoise colored skin. One day he was running from his enemies in the hot desert. Whenever he stopped to rest, his perspiration ran onto the ground, collected in rocks and became turquoise.

There are many Legends about Turquoise;

The Native American\'s placed turquoise in their tombs to guard the dead.

The Pima consider it to bring good fortune and strength and that it helped overcome illness.

The Zuni believe that blue turquoise was male and of the sky and green turquoise was female and of the earth; and believed that it protected them from demons

Pueblo Indians thought that its color was stolen from the sky.

In Hopi legend the lizard who travels between the above and the below, excretes turquoise and that the stone can hold back floods.

The Apache felt that turquoise on a gun or bow helped warriors and hunters to aim accurately.

The Navajo consider it as good fortune to wear and believe it could appease the Wind Spirit.

In Asia it was considered protection against the evil eye.

Some say that in the the thirteenth century, turquoise was named in the mistaken belief that it came from Turkey. But it is believed that the name turquoise is apparently related to the fact that is was brought to Europe from the Eastern Mediterranean by Levantine traders, generally know as Turks. It has been used as a valuable ornament for ages and was used by the Egyptians thousands of years ago. The color is of course, turquoise, but this color actually varies from greenish blue to sky blue shades.

That may be true or it may be that the name comes from the Persian word for turquoise, firouze, since Persia has been a major source of this gemstone for thousands of years. In any case, the blue of this gemstone is so vivid and distinct that it has given its name to the color.

Turquoise is one of the oldest known gem materials. The Egyptians were mining turquoise in 3,200 BC in the Sinai. The blue of turquoise was thought to have powerful metaphysical properties by many ancient cultures. Montezuma\'s treasure, now displayed in the British Museum, includes a fantastic carved serpent covered by a mosaic of turquoise. In ancient Mexico, turquoise was reserved for the gods, it would not be worn by mere mortals.

CARE: Turquoise is porous and should be kept away from chemicals. Clean it with warm soapy water only.

Coral is known to be used as a gem since prehistoric times. Coral has a history of religious meaning. Coral is one of the seven treasures in Buddhist scriptures. Coral was long thought to be a strong talisman against bleeding, evil spirits, and hurricanes. Although soft, coral is tough enough to be worn in jewelry. Its most famous use is in jewelry from Italy and the Native American tribes of the southwest.

Its color ranges from white to red.The most valuable colors of coral are red, black, and pink, which is known as angel skin coral.  It grows in branches that look like underwater trees. Most coral is found in the Mediterranean Sea or in the Pacific off Japan and Taiwan.

This organic stone is very beneficial to the physical body. \"In India, China, and Japan, it is extensively used in Rosaries, and is very popular, being regarded as a sovereign remedy against cholera and all epidemics, and invaluable in indicating to its wearer the presence of poison, or the danger of illness, by changing colour.\"

Red coral strengthens the blood and reproductive system, improves energy and calms emotion...builds flesh and muscle, gives courage and improves work capacity. Dark red coral is referred to as oxblood; Red coral represents Mars in Vedic astrology and, hence, is hot to warming in influence.

When you say the word coral, most people think of the coral reefs in the South Pacific like the Great Barrier Reef off Australia. However, these coral reefs are formed by a different species than the coral traditionally used in jewelry Corallium rubrum and Corallium japonicum.

CARE:  Coral is much softer than other gem materials with a hardness of only 3.5. As a result it should be stored carefully to avoid scratches. Coral is also porous so it should not come into contact with chemicals. To clean it, wipe it gently with a moist soft cloth.
