\"RARE\" ANTIQUE L & JG STICKLEY MORRIS CHAIR Arts & Crafts Mission Oak Antique:
$2900.00

Great, possibly rare antique L & JG Stickley quartersawn oak Morris chair recliner w/ black leather cushions.
Unusual design.
Many design features.
Features include dramatically arched seat stretchers, large paddle arms that taper and slope noticeably downward front to back, long...almost full length graceful corbels, flared Mackmurdo style feet, quadriinear leg/post construction, and pinned mortise and tenon joinery w/ thru-tenons.
Size: 31.5\" wide, 36\" deep, 40\" tall.
This is a three-position recliner which adjusts via use of the original back bar that rests on raised square pegs.
Mortise and tenon construction.
The post or leg tenon ends extend up past the arms at the front and back and are pinned into the arms.
The frame is pinned w/ dowels.
The seat frame has faceted corner blocks which are screwed in place.
Not a commonly found chair...from what little I\'ve found researching it, and from what I\'ve been told, only a few examples are known to exist.
I haven\'t been able to find any sale records, nor can it be found in any of the many L & JG Stickley period catalog reprints.
I\'m aware of two other examples including the one pictured from the exhibition and they both appear to be from \"...the work of...\" era...1912-16.
The same form is pictured on page 115 in the 1995 exhibition book \"Innovation & Derivation, Contributions of L & JG Stickley to the Arts and Crafts Movement\", a Craftsman Farms publication written by Donald Davidoff and Stephen Gray.
In this catalog / book, which compares the work of L & JG to Gustav, they compare it to the Gus bow-arm Morris chair. It is listed as model 406 but another collector opined that it is model 442 or 443 (can\'t remember).
The chair in the exhibition catalog has larger dimensions; this recliner seems appropriate for a mid-size man or woman.
Wide at the front but nice and cozy at the back.
It is unsigned.
Condition is good and solid.
Refinished.
Tight crackline to front of right arm (see photos).
Small chip repaired on arched side stretcher.
Photos taken outside...actual color is slightly darker and noticeably so when indoors. Will ship freight. This will be an additional cost and the buyer pays for that service. I can help facilitate any packing or shipping.
