Whenone hears about a textual variant in the Bible, the response should not be:\"I\'ve never heard of that before!\" or \"That\'s not in my KingJames Version of the Bible!\" But rather it should be: \"What wasoriginally written by Luke when he wrote Acts? At Acts 4:24 the earliest andshortest version of the prayer states: “Lord, you who made the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, and all that is in them.”This is strongly supported by the important papyrus #74 of the 7thcentury, the Greek Codex Sinaiticus, the Greek Codex Alexandrinus, the Greek CodexVaticanus, a few Greek minuscules, Jerome’sLatin Vulgate (as seen here, with the Latin \"Domine,\" and no mention of \"God,\" in the 3rd scanned image, right column, 16th line from the bottom), andthe Bohairic Coptic. According to BruceM. Metzger, A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament, p. 321, “Theshortest form of text appears to be the oldest; the additions were doubtlessmade in the interest of heightening the apostles’ reverence in prayer. If one of the longer expressions wereoriginal, no scribe would have abbreviated it.”Later, some scribe added another reference to God, by stating: “Lord, you are God, who has made the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, and all that is in them.” This later text is alsofound in the inferior King James Version, but it does not represent what Lukewrote in the Acts of the Apostles.
